Last look 10 September 2026 Why does Felixstowe matter if an Asia ship is late? Because this Suffolk quay is where a lot of the high street gets off the ship. Not crude oil. Not Ukrainian wheat. Steel containers — furniture, phones, heaters, cable, car parts, clothes, toys. In 2025 goods worth about $41 billion were logged as imports through Felixstowe. China is the big origin. If the Cape adds two weeks at sea, this is the first British door that feels it. Then a train or a lorry. Then a warehouse. Then a shelf. |
Forget the postcard of cranes. Think of Felixstowe as a very large letterbox. Asia posts a metal garage. Suffolk opens it. The Midlands and the South East read the mail.

1 · The ship Usually via the Cape in 2026. China to this quay: about 43–47 days. Suez would have been 31–33. |

2 · The quay Trinity and Landguard terminals. Deep water for the largest container ships. A late bunch of vessels means a wait for a crane, then a wait in the yard. |

3 · Rail or the A14 Britain’s busiest rail freight port — about 58 trains a day, three rail terminals, roughly 29% of inland boxes by rail (half of those heading to the North and West Midlands). The rest go by road. |

4 · The warehouse, then the shop A late ship here is a thin bay in two to four weeks, not an empty country. Diesel can already be dear from Hormuz before this parcel even lands. |
What kind of port is Felixstowe, in one sentence?
A container port. DfT figures have long shown Felixstowe as the country’s top door for lift-on, lift-off boxes — about a third of UK container tonnage in recent annual splits, with London (Gateway and the Thames cluster) and Southampton taking most of the rest. Three ports handle the deep-sea giants. This is one of them. It is not Immingham. It is not Dover.
How much stuff actually comes through here?
| Measure | Figure |
| Import value logged at Felixstowe, 2025 | about $41.4 billion (OEC / customs-based port data) |
| Export value, 2025 | about $7.2 billion — this door is an in-tray more than an out-tray |
| Biggest origin, June 2026 | China, about £1.86 billion that month |
| Q1 2026 vs Q1 2025 (DfT) | Felixstowe container units down about 16% as some loops favoured London Gateway |
| Inland rail | Port says ~1 million TEU a year by rail, ~58 trains a day |
London Gateway had a huge 2025. That does not make Felixstowe a backwater. It makes Britain a two- and three-door country for Asia boxes. Your parcel still has to pick one.
What are the biggest things that arrive?
Official port-of-entry values for 2025 put these at the top of the import list. They are not tonnes of oil. They are the contents of containers.
| Import line (2025, Felixstowe) | About | If this ship is late, you notice… |
| Other furniture | £999 million | Sofas, tables, flat-packs. IKEA-type and high-street home. |
| Telephones | £773 million | Phones and similar kit. A model gap, not a silent country. |
| Electric heaters | £747 million | Winter lines. Miss the season and they sit in a yard until next year. |
| Insulated wire | £711 million | Factories and builders. A production stop, not a shop gap. |
| Motor-vehicle parts | £683 million | A line at a plant. This is when air can be worth it. |
June 2026, same door: cars, furniture, wire, seats, electric batteries near the top, with China still the giant origin. Cars in a month can jump because a few vessels land at once. That is a calendar bunch, not a new oil well.
What else is in those containers?
Almost anything that fits and was made in Asia. The official top five are the money. The rest of the yard looks like this.
| Family of goods | Examples on this quay | Delay shows up as |
| Home and garden | Furniture, seats, lamps, plastic housewares, tools | Thin homeware bay. Online “out of stock”. |
| Clothes and shoes | Garments, footwear, bags from China, Bangladesh, Vietnam | A size or colour missing. Peak fashion misses the window. |
| Toys and seasonal | Games, decorations, Christmas lines | November gap. Air is a last resort and dear. |
| Electronics | Phones, screens, small appliances, batteries, computers | Model not on the peg. Warehouse holds the rest. |
| Factory and build | Wire, engines parts, pumps, packaging, machinery bits | A line stops. This is the parcel you fly. |
| Wheels | Car parts; some finished vehicles in containers or on the same ships’ extra space | Dealer wait. Plant wait. |
| E-commerce | Amazon FBA and similar, mixed SKUs in the same box | One listing dies while the rest of the site looks fine. |
| What does not use this door as its main gate | Go here instead |
| Crude, diesel, heating oil, jet | Hormuz and Immingham |
| Wheat, maize, sunflower oil in bulk | Black Sea and the Humber |
| Irish and EU lorries / trailers | Dover and Holyhead, not this quay |
What leaves Felixstowe?
Much less than arrives. 2025 exports through the port were about $7.2 billion against $41 billion in. Top export lines include packaged medicines, scrap copper and aluminium, gas turbines and engines. Empty containers going back to Asia are part of the picture too. A Cape delay on the inbound ship can still snarl the empties going out.
If a ship is two weeks late, what actually happens in Suffolk?
| Where the wait sits | What you see |
| Still at sea (Cape) | Nothing on the quay yet. The date in the booking was a hope. |
| Ship arrived, crane busy | Yard dwell rises. Several late ships at once is worse than one. |
| On a train or the A14 | Midlands warehouse slot missed. Booking fee, extra storage. |
| In the shop | One bay thin. Bread and petrol can look normal. Different gates. |
The port does not “run out of Britain”. It runs late on named lines. Fly only the part that stops a factory. Do not fly the sofa.
Felixstowe versus London Gateway versus Southampton
| Felixstowe | London Gateway | Southampton | |
| Where | Suffolk | Thames, Essex | Hampshire |
| Job | Classic deep-sea box door | Fast-growing; 3m+ TEU in 2025 | Boxes and cars |
| 2026 habit | Still a main China call; some loops have shifted | Maersk has named it a key UK entry | DP World’s other big UK box door |
What should I do if my container is booked here?
| Ask | Then |
| Suez or Cape? | Cape: add two weeks before you promise a customer. See Cape of Good Hope. |
| Which terminal and which inland mode? | Rail to the Midlands can be the quiet hero. Road is the A14. |
| Is this the line that stops a factory? | If yes, price air. If it is a sofa, wait. |
