Explainers

A British aisle is the last room in the house. Before a gap shows, the delay has already sat in a strait, a tanker, a warehouse and a lorry. Fuel moves in days. Boxes move in weeks. Bread moves later still. Each explainer is one door. Read the clock first. Then open the page that matches the bill in your hand.

The shop and the box

Tap · last look 4 Oct 2026

Will the UK run out of water?

No. A hosepipe ban is not empty taps. Drinking water comes from local rivers, reservoirs and rock, not from a ship. Store about 9 litres a person for three days. Do not fill the bath because a reservoir photo looks low.

Why UK shops run out

A stuck sea route does not empty a bay overnight. It changes time and cost first. Fuel can jump in 1–14 days. A parcel from Asia can be 3–6 weeks late. By the time the aisle looks thin, the delay has already sat in a port, a warehouse and a lorry.

Cupboard · last look 4 Oct 2026

What should I stock up on?

Three days of food you already eat, plus drinking water and a tin opener. Fish, beans, fruit in juice, crackers, peanut butter, UHT milk. It covers a power cut, a missed van, or a thin bay. It is not a reason to clear the aisle.

Boxes · last look 12 Sep 2026

Cape versus Suez

The Suez Canal is open. Most Asia–UK container ships still go around Africa because of the Red Sea on the way to that canal. The Cape adds about 10 to 14 days. If the line will not write Suez against your sailing, add two weeks before you promise a date.

Cut-off · last look 16 Sep 2026

Why a UK Christmas parcel is already late in September

The aisle does not wait for the Red Sea to look normal. It waits for a ship that left Shenzhen on the long road. If the box has not left China by early October, it is not a mid-December parcel. Peak stack at Felixstowe and London Gateway is the next six weeks.

Felixstowe vs Immingham

Britain does not have one port. Felixstowe lifts Asia boxes — sofas, toys, phones. Immingham pumps tonnes — diesel, pellets, ore. Weigh the country and the Humber is huge. Count the Christmas aisle and Felixstowe is the door. A late sofa and dearer diesel are two stories.

Air vs sea for a UK box

Air is under 1% of UK tonnes and about a third of the value. Sea is 86% of the weight. Fly the part that stops a factory. Sail the sofa. The test: would one week of empty shelf cost more than the air premium?

Fuel and energy

Lorry · last look 12 Sep 2026

Fuel that moves the lorries

The lorry burns diesel. Diesel is priced off a world oil pool. When Hormuz tightens, Brent can move the same day. Britain still has to buy diesel, jet and heating oil. Raise diesel and you raise the cost of moving food that is already in the country. The shop can look full while the delivery has already got dearer.

Tank · last look 16 Sep 2026

Heating oil versus diesel

They jumped together because both are middle distillates. Heating oil jumped more because it is kerosene, priced off jet, sold to 1.5 million tanks with no Ofgem cap. A 500-litre order that was £320 in February was £520 in March. Airlines bid first. The farmhouse boiler does not get a reserved queue.

Meter · last look 16 Sep 2026

Why a UK gas bill can still feel Hormuz

The molecule in the pipe is mostly Norway and the North Sea. The price on the bill is a world price. Qatar is about 1% of UK gas and a fat slice of world LNG behind Hormuz. Three doors into the meter: a fat pipeline, a US ship, a thin dashed line.

Yard · last look 16 Sep 2026

Red diesel vs kerosene

Two off-grid tanks. Two HMRC stamps. Kerosene heats the house, pays nil duty and 5% VAT, and tracks jet. Red diesel runs the tractor, pays 6.48p duty until December, and tracks diesel. Construction lost red in April 2022. Do not swap the tanks.

Food and feed

Loaf · last look 12 Sep 2026

Grain, oil and animal feed

Wheat, maize and sunflower oil are bought on a world market. Britain still grows a lot of wheat. It still buys cover. Defra recorded £601 million of unmilled wheat imports in 2025, and £3.5 billion of animal feed. Ukraine supplied about two-thirds of the UK’s crude sunflower-oil import value that year. Futures move in days. The loaf moves later.

How to use this desk

Pump or heating tank moved — start with fuel. Farm bowser or red diesel — start with the two tanks. Gas bill twitched — start with the meter, not the molecule. Sofa or part late — start with Cape versus Suez, then the Christmas cut-off. Wrong door — Felixstowe is the box, Immingham is the tonne. Only one SKU is late — air versus sea. Loaf or feed bill — Black Sea. The weekly log on Status is the dated page. Hormuz and Immingham are the doors those pages keep naming.
