Last look 10 September 2026 Why does Immingham matter when Gulf oil is tight? Because this is the energy door, not the high-street door. Felixstowe unpacks sofas and phones. Immingham unpacks fuel, wood pellets, ore and other bulk on the Humber. Grimsby and Immingham together took about 10% of all UK port tonnes in 2024 — second only to London as a cluster. When Hormuz tightens, Britain feels it as dearer diesel and heating oil. This is one of the quays where the physical barrels and products show up. |

ABP calls Immingham the UK’s largest port by tonnage, around 46 million tonnes in a typical year, and part of a Humber group with Grimsby, Hull and Goole. DfT counts Grimsby and Immingham (including Killingholme) as one statistical port — 43.7 million tonnes in 2024, 10.2% of UK major-port traffic.

A tanker does not have to “be from Hormuz” to matter here. Oil is one pool. When the Gulf door tightens, the product that still has to reach this jetty costs more, wherever it loaded.
How fast does a shock here reach a British pump?
Brent can move the same day as a tanker strike. UK diesel, jet and heating oil follow inside two weeks. Every lorry that leaves this estuary — or any other — then pays more, including food already in the country. |
What arrives — and who burns it?
| Cargo | Who uses it | If it is late or dear |
| Oil products — diesel, petrol blendstock, jet, heating oil | Pumps, airports, off-grid homes, hauliers | Forecourt and heating tank first. Shop shelf still full. |
| Crude for the south-Humber refineries | Local refining. The UK is a large net importer of products since Grangemouth closed. | Less home-made diesel and jet. More buying of finished product. |
| Wood pellets (biomass) | Drax and other generators. Immingham Renewable Fuels Terminal was built for this. | Power-station stocks, not a Tesco bay. Rail from the silos is the next step. |
| Coal and other dry bulk | Industry and remaining thermal use. HIT handles ships up to about 130,000 tonnes. | Factory and power cost. Not Christmas toys. |
| Iron ore and agri-bulk | Steel and feed/fertiliser chains on the Humber | Plant ration and farm cover. Black Sea tightness can rhyme with this quay. |
| Ro-Ro trailers | DFDS and others to northern Europe and Scandinavia. Eight Ro-Ro berths, 30+ sailings a week. | A delayed ferry is a delayed lorry, not a delayed Cape ship. |
| Short-sea containers | Feeders, not the 24,000 TEU Asia giants | Useful extra door. Not Felixstowe’s job. |
| LPG and other gases | Gas jetty traffic for industry and some heating | Contract price. Off-grid users notice. |
DfT still counts liquid bulk as the biggest UK cargo group by tonnes (163 million tonnes in 2024, about 39% of major-port cargo). Oil products overtook crude as the largest liquid-bulk slice that year. Immingham is one of the named doors for those products, with Milford Haven, London and Southampton.
Did Immingham get quieter in 2025?
In places, yes — and that is useful, not scary. Q4 2025 liquid bulk at Grimsby and Immingham was sharply down on the year (DfT: about 1.9 million tonnes, −43% for that quarter). Dry bulk at the same cluster jumped about 46% that quarter and went back toward 2022 levels. The mix moves. The door does not vanish. Clyde’s Finnart closure also pulled UK liquid-bulk totals down. Read a quarterly drop as a mix change unless the jetties themselves are dark.
If heating oil is up, is that Felixstowe’s fault?
No. Heating oil in British homes tracks wholesale jet more than the petrol pump. Jet is the named Gulf product link in UK import figures. The lorry that delivers the tankful still burns diesel. Both stories start at Hormuz and show up as cost at this kind of door. A late sofa at Felixstowe is a different clock. Full energy chain: Strait of Hormuz.
What should I do if my cost sits on this quay?
| If you | Treat Immingham as |
| Run lorries or a warehouse | A diesel-price door. Budget the extra before the forecourt looks empty. |
| Heat with oil off the gas grid | A product-import door. Scotland feels this sooner after Grangemouth. |
| Buy jet | Watch Gulf product and Rotterdam, not a toy-bay headline. |
| Wait on an Asia parcel | Wrong door. Use Felixstowe and the Cape. |
