Last look 12 September 2026 Why does Southampton matter for ships into the UK? It is the south-coast door for deep-sea containers and for cars. Associated British Ports owns the estate. DP World runs the container terminal and handled more than 2 million TEU there in 2025. ABP calls Southampton the UK’s number one vehicle port — 480,000 vehicle units in 2024, with space for about 61,000 cars on the ground at once. Asia boxes use the same two roads as Felixstowe: about 31–33 days from China via Suez, 43–47 via the Cape. A late ship here is a late dealer car or a late bay in a southern warehouse, then the M27. |

What arrives — and what leaves?
| Cargo | If the ship is late |
| Asia containers — clothes, electronics, home goods, parts | A thin bay in the south. Same Cape calendar as Felixstowe. |
| Finished vehicles in and out | A dealer wait. Several carriers in one week can look like a flood, then a gap. |
| UK exports in containers | A late inbound ship can delay the empties and the export load going back. |
| Dry bulk — feed, fertiliser, scrap, aggregates, salt, biomass | A farm or works waits on cover. Western Docks handle this mix. |
If my container is booked to Southampton instead of Felixstowe, am I late?
| What changed | What you do |
| Quay only | Change the inland booking. Sea days can stay the same. |
| Road as well: Suez to Cape | Add 10–14 days. See Cape versus Suez. |
| Stock is for London | London Gateway is usually the shorter lorry run. |
| Stock is for the Midlands or North | Felixstowe’s heavier rail often wins. Southampton still runs about 23 trains a day. |
When must Christmas boxes leave China if they are booked here?
| Need it in a southern warehouse | Leave East Asia by (Cape road) |
| Mid-October | Late August |
| Black Friday / mid-November | Late September |
| On a shelf before Christmas | First half of October |
If vehicle ships bunch, will there be no new cars?
A bunch of carriers can fill the compounds, then leave a quiet week. ABP’s 61,000 spaces are a cushion, not an endless car park. Dealers feel a wait. The country does not run out of cars on a Tuesday. Ask the brand which vessel and which week — not whether “Southampton is closed”.
