Why did UK heating oil jump when diesel did — and jump more? They are siblings from the same barrel, not twins. Diesel fills the lorry. Heating oil is kerosene — the lighter cut that also fills an aircraft. When Hormuz tightens, Brent moves the same day. Diesel follows gasoil. Heating oil follows jet. Then a thin, unregulated market and a tanker to a farm tank add pence a forecourt never sees. |
If you remember one sentence: diesel jumped because the world is short of middle distillate. Heating oil jumped more because it shares a slice with jet fuel, sold to 1.5 million tanks that cannot wait.

What UK heating oil actually is
Think of a crude barrel as a layered cake. The refinery heats it and slices by boiling point.
| Light · petrol Cars on the forecourt |
| Middle-light · kerosene Jet fuel AND home heating oil this is the fight |
| Middle-heavy · diesel / gasoil Lorries, vans, red diesel |
| Heavy · fuel oil, bitumen Ships, roads |
| Fuel | Slice | Who sets the UK number |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol | Light | Home refineries still make enough |
| White diesel | Middle-heavy | ARA gasoil + US imports |
| Red diesel | Same molecule, dye | Same wholesale, smaller duty |
| Heating oil | Middle-light | European jet / kerosene + delivery |
| Jet | Same family as kero | Gulf product + Rotterdam |
UK houses burn kerosene (BS 2869 Class C2, 28-sec). Not red diesel. Not white diesel. They move together because both are middle distillates. Heating oil can outrun diesel because it is priced off jet.
| Who heats with oil · share of homes | |
|---|---|
| Northern Ireland ~68% | ~500,000 tanks |
| Rural GB patches ~20% | Highlands, SW, East Anglia |
| UK overall ~5% | 1.5 million homes |
CMA / government split: England ~760,000 · Scotland ~140,000 · Wales ~110,000 · NI ~500,000.
Why it jumped when diesel jumped
The shortage is in the middle of the barrel. A Gulf shock does not need a Kuwaiti tanker on the Humber. Brent moves. Every middle-distillate litre follows.
| 1 · Hormuz Fewer tankers leave the Gulf. Less crude and less Gulf jet reach the world that day. |
| “ |
| 2 · Brent The crude yardstick jumps the same day. Britain pays it anyway. |
| “ |
| 3 · Middle of the barrel Diesel and jet both get dearer. Refineries cannot print extra kerosene. |
| “ |
| 4 · UK diesel ARA rack and the forecourt follow in days. The lorry bill moves. |
| “ |
| 5 · UK heating oil Distributors buy kerosene off jet wholesale. A tanker drives to a farm tank. |
Two doors sit behind both fuels in 2026: Hormuz, and damaged Russian stills. When both pinch, the distillate crack stays wide. Diesel near 193p and petrol near 171p carry the same 52.95p duty. Heating oil skips that duty line. It still uses the same squeezed middle.
Why UK diesel is dearer than petrol · Strait of Hormuz · Fuel that moves the lorries
Why it jumped more
Five reasons. Market structure, not a conspiracy.
1. Priced off jet, not the diesel pump
UKIFDA says UK and Irish heating oil tracks European jet. Jet is kerosene with a stricter spec. In 2025 at least two-fifths of Europes jet imports came through Hormuz. Kuwait was about 35% of UK jet imports. India, Saudi Arabia and the UAE each sent more than a million tonnes.
Airlines bid first. A farmhouse boiler does not get a reserved queue.
| First 2026 shock wholesale rise | |
|---|---|
| Petrol +15% | 15% |
| Diesel +48% | 48% |
| Kerosene / jet +74% | 74% |
UKIFDA / Fuel Oil News, spring 2026. Same war. Different slices.
| Product | Wholesale | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol | +15% | UK still makes enough |
| Diesel / gasoil | +48% | Import short; Russian stills damaged |
| Kerosene / jet | +74% | Gulf jet + aviation bid + thin heating market |
2. Small market, no cap
1.5 million tanks. No Ofgem cap. No standing charge. Distributors often buy wholesale the same day they quote.
| CMA, Feb ’ Mar 2026 | Figure |
|---|---|
| Average retail | 64p ’ 104p (+64%) |
| April peak | 123p (+92% from February) |
| 500-litre order | £320 ’ £520 (+£200) |
| Share that was wholesale | 83% |
| Distributor operating costs | ~6% |
| Extra distributor profit | the rest real, not the engine |
| 500-litre bill | Cost |
|---|---|
| February 2026 | £320 |
| March 2026 (CMA) | £520 |
| Mid-September 2026* | ~£580 |
*September figure is a 500 L slice of current ~111119p inc-VAT comparison averages, not a CMA reprint.
| Nation | Feb | Mar |
|---|---|---|
| Scotland | 69p | 113p |
| Wales | 64p | 106p |
| England | 65p | 103p |
| N. Ireland | 57p | 97p |
CMA. Scotland starts dearer and stays dearer. NI starts cheaper and still hurts because so many homes have no other pipe.
3. Delivery is part of the price
Diesels last yard is a hose you drive to. Heating oils last mile is a tanker you wait for. A 5001,000 litre quote already includes wholesale, depot, truck, rural miles and 5% domestic VAT.
| Ticket | What you buy |
|---|---|
| Diesel pump | Molecule + 52.95p duty + 20% VAT + forecourt |
| Heating oil | Jet-linked molecule + depot + tanker + rural miles + 5% VAT |
| Red diesel | Molecule + 6.48p rebated duty from 15 June 2026 |
4. You cannot print extra kerosene
A refinery can swing a little between diesel and jet. Not a lot. Not overnight. After Grangemouth and Lindsey closed in 2025 the UK buys more finished product. DUKES 2025: highest net product imports since 2013. Diesel from the US and ARA. Jet still names the Gulf.
| While UK stills ran more crude | After 2025 closures |
|---|---|
| More finished product at home | UK buys more finished diesel and jet |
| Crude jump partly absorbed in stills | World price lands faster at pump and tank |
| Scotland had a crude refinery | Scotland feels the heating-oil ticket sooner |
| Kuwait ~35% of UK jet imports |
India >1 million t |
Saudi >1 million t |
UAE >1 million t |
DUKES 2025 jet origins. Diesel arrived mainly from the United States, the Netherlands and Belgium priced off the same world pool.
5. September fills winter tanks
Lorries run all year. Boilers wake in October. If the tank is at a quarter, you buy. Aviation and heating pass each other in the same month. When Gulf jet is thin, that pass is a fight.
Clocks and 2026 numbers
| Clock | Diesel | Heating oil |
|---|---|---|
| Same day | Brent and the diesel crack | Brent and the jet crack |
| 17 days | UK rack, red diesel, haulier extras | Distributor quote rewritten |
| 114 days | White diesel on the pump | Tanker at the farm gate |
| Winter | Lorries still roll | A low tank becomes a cold house |
| Moment | Heating oil | Diesel pump | What moved |
|---|---|---|---|
| JanFeb | ~64p | ~145150p | Before the Iran war |
| March | ~104p | toward 180p+ | First Hormuz shock |
| April peak | ~123p | ~192p | Kerosene outran diesel in % |
| June | eased, still high | 176.6p | Crude off spike; red-diesel duty cut |
| August | ~97106p | ~181p | Second leg building |
| Mid-Sep | ~117p ex VAT | ~193p | Saudi pipeline on a thin Hormuz |
A 1,000-litre fill at 64p was about £640. Fueltools inclusive 16 September print was about £1,225. That is the farmhouse version of the £105 diesel fill.
The comparison that matters
| Petrol | Diesel | Heating oil | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slice | Light | Middle-heavy | Middle-light |
| Made enough at home? | Mostly yes | No | No follows jet |
| Duty | 52.95p | 52.95p | Not road duty |
| Household VAT | 20% | 20% | 5% |
| Price cap | No | No | No Ofgem |
| Buy from | Forecourt | Forecourt | Distributor + tanker |
| UK door | Refinery / terminal | Immingham + ARA | Same door, then a depot |
| Gulf fingerprint | Weak | Price, not cargo | Jet cargo + price |
| Hormuz week | Last | Fast | Fast, often larger in % |
Petrol is a home loaf with a spare. Diesel is a traded loaf with a short. Heating oil shares the tin with every aircraft in Europe. A late sofa is a Cape story. A jump in the tank is Hormuz.
What to watch
| Watch | Why | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Brent | Floor under every litre | Any market page |
| European jet | The wholesale heating oil follows | UKIFDA / screens |
| ARA gasoil | Prices UK diesel imports | Wholesale screens |
| Your 500 L / 1,000 L quote | The only number that fills your tank | Two or three distributors, same morning |
| If you are | Do this |
|---|---|
| Tank below a third | Two quotes today. Do not wait for frost. |
| Tank above half | Budget the next fill at this weeks number. |
| Oil club | Helps the last mile. Does not repeal jet wholesale. |
| Farm | Red diesel and kerosene are different tickets. |
| Lorries | Budget dearer diesel. Expect a fuel extra. |
| Cancelled order | Keep the email. CMA took a view in March 2026. |
Sea routes into the UK · Immingham
The short answer
They jumped together because both are middle distillates from one pool, and Britain now imports that middle. Heating oil jumped more because it is kerosene priced off jet. Airlines bid first. 1.5 million tanks, no cap, a tanker to a farm.
Diesel is the lorry clock. Heating oil is the house clock. They share a gate. They do not share a till.
