A 55-litre family tank of UK diesel cost £104.90 on the official average for the week commencing 14 September 2026. That is 190.72 pence a litre, multiplied by 55. The litre is not a mystery number.

It is wholesale fuel, delivery, a retailer margin, a 52.95p duty stamp, and VAT at 20% of the whole ticket. Change the litres and the same parts scale. Change the pump price and only the wholesale bit and the VAT in pence move.

How do you work out the cost of a diesel tank?
Write the pump price as pounds, then multiply by the litres.
190.72 pence is £1.9072. £1.9072 × 55 = £104.896, which rounds to £104.90 on the till if the pump bills to the nearest penny.
You do not need the official average. Put the number on the pump you are standing at into the same sum. If that pump reads 186.9p, a 55-litre fill is £102.80. If it reads 199.9p, the same tank is £109.95. The method does not change. The litre does.
Most UK family diesel cars sit between 50 and 60 litres. Vans sit between 70 and 90. The 55-litre tank is the yardstick used on this site so one page can be compared with another. It is not a claim that your car holds 55 litres.
What is inside that £104.90?
The tank is the litre, multiplied. The litre has three working parts. Wholesale fuel, delivery and the retailer margin sit in one bucket. Fuel duty is a fixed stamp. VAT is 20% of the whole ticket, including duty. On the week commencing 14 September 2026 those parts looked like this.
| Part of the litre | Pence | On 55 litres |
|---|---|---|
| Wholesale, delivery, margin | 105.98 | £58.29 |
| Fuel duty | 52.95 | £29.12 |
| VAT at 20% | 31.79 | £17.48 |
| Tank | 190.72 | £104.90 |
Table 2. Same split as how much of the UK diesel price is tax. Duty is HMRC 52.95p. VAT = pump ÷ 1.20 × 0.20. One penny of rounding sits in the tank total.
Duty does not grow when the pump grows. On a 55-litre tank it is always £29.12 while the rate is 52.95p. VAT does grow, because it is a share of the ticket. The moving cost on a dearer week is the wholesale bucket plus a little extra VAT.
Why is my fill not £104.90?
The official figure is a national average. It is not the pump on your street.
Supermarket sites usually sit a few pence under the oil-company average. Motorway sites sit above it. On 15 September 2026 the spread from cheapest to dearest was tens of pence a litre. That is a shopping fact, not a tax fact. Duty is 52.95p at both ends of that spread. The gap is wholesale, delivery and the retailer margin, plus VAT on that gap.
| If the pump reads | 55-litre tank | What that usually is |
|---|---|---|
| 182.9p | £100.60 | Cheap supermarket week |
| 190.7p | £104.90 | Official average that week |
| 199.9p | £109.95 | Dearer oil-company or motorway |

A cheap pump does not mean the country has spare diesel. It means one retailer bought earlier, or prices slower. The national tank is still the wholesale molecule plus the same two taxes. That molecule is why diesel sat above petrol on the same week. The tax rates did not differ. The import ticket did. Full split: why UK diesel is more expensive than petrol.
How much tax is on a tank of diesel?
On the 55-litre official tank that week: duty £29.12, VAT £17.48, tax £46.60. That is 44% of the fill. The other £58.29 is not tax.
Duty on the tank only changes if HMRC changes the stamp or you put in a different number of litres. VAT on the tank changes whenever the pump changes. Divide any tank total by six to get the VAT. £104.90 ÷ 6 = £17.48.
A 5p duty change, passed on in full, does not move a 55-litre tank by £2.75. It moves it by £3.30, because VAT sits on the duty. That sum is worked on the tax page. This page keeps the tank in pounds.
Does a diesel tank cost more than a petrol tank?
Usually, yes — because the diesel litre is dearer, not because the tank is larger.
On the same official week petrol averaged 168.14p. A 55-litre petrol tank was £92.48. The diesel tank was £104.90. The gap was £12.42. Duty on both tanks was £29.12. The extra on diesel was wholesale plus a few extra pounds of VAT.
| 55 litres | Petrol | Diesel |
|---|---|---|
| Pump average | 168.14p | 190.72p |
| Tank | £92.48 | £104.90 |
| Duty on the tank | £29.12 | £29.12 |
| VAT on the tank | £15.41 | £17.48 |
DESNZ week commencing 14 September 2026. Same litres. Same duty stamp. Different wholesale litre.
How fast does the tank bill move?
Brent can reprice in a session. UK wholesale diesel usually follows in days. The white-diesel pump follows in one to two weeks. That is why a family tank can jump by several pounds between two fills without a tax change.
| Clock | What moves | What you notice |
|---|---|---|
| Same day | Brent and the diesel crack | A headline, not the receipt |
| 1–7 days | UK wholesale rack | Haulier surcharge, farm quote |
| 1–14 days | White diesel at the pump | The £105 fill |
The tank is the fast clock. The loaf is the slow clock. A dearer diesel tank this week is a cost already paid by the lorry. Food prices follow later, if they follow at all, on contracts and supermarket deals. That lag is a different page.
What should I actually watch before the next fill?
Four numbers. Not every war map.
| Watch | Why it matters for the tank | Where |
|---|---|---|
| The pump on your street | This is the only number that bills you | The forecourt / Fuel Finder |
| DESNZ weekly average | Tells you if your street is cheap or dear | gov.uk weekly road fuel prices |
| Diesel versus petrol gap | A wide gap is a distillate squeeze, not a tax change | Fuel Finder / RAC |
| HMRC duty rate | Only this line changes the stamp on the tank | HMRC fuel duty rates |
If you need a cheaper fill this week, compare supermarket sites with the oil-company average. A few pence a litre is several pounds on 55 litres. That is shopping. It is not a national surplus.
The short answer
How much does a tank of diesel cost in the UK? On the official average for the week commencing 14 September 2026, 55 litres cost £104.90. Forty litres cost £76.29. Eighty litres cost £152.58. Of the family tank, £46.60 was tax and £58.29 was not. Duty on that tank is a fixed £29.12 while the rate is 52.95p. The rest of the movement is the wholesale litre and the VAT that sits on it. Use the number on your pump. Multiply by your litres. That is the bill.
